Raoef Mamedov (Ganja, Azerbaijan 1956) is an Azerbaijani director and artist.
This project combines cinematic theatre, photography, art history, theology and computer technology depicting biblical scenes from the New Testament which are staged by people with Down’s syndrome. These dramatic scenes are depicted with a sublime photographing technique, reminiscent of the paintings by Caravaggio and Georges de la Tour. This book is completed with a folding pentaptych divided into five panels, presenting Jesus and the Twelve Apostles, reproducing very faithfully the gestures and reactions of the protagonists of Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting. Mamedov’s work invites us to question the role and place of the disabled in our society; by playing on our perceptions of normality, beauty and the sacred. He brings us face to face with our own contradictions.
